Juneteenth is a celebration that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19, 1865 that the Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war was over and that the enslaved were now free. Denton has celebrated Juneteenth annually since 1891. Previous celebrations may have occurred, but were not recorded.
