First things first: Breathe. I know that Turkey Day seems like it came and went too quickly, and I know that December is rolling along much too fast. But never fear, my fellow Denton lovers: there is still time to shop for your friends, family and significant others, and to have fun while doing it. Trust me: when have I, your resident love guru, ever steered you wrong?
Each year, the good folks at The Bearded Monk do us all a great holiday service by celebrating the season the way St. Nick (and his good friend, Saint Arnold) would want: through beer. Every day from December 13 through Christmas Eve, The Bearded Monk will offer a beer of the night alongside a celebration that includes snacks, prizes and plenty of local art. This event kills two brews with one stone: You can bring some friends or fam with you for a fun night out, and pick up a brew — or two, if you’re on the Nice List — as a gift.
This time of year, the always vibrant SCRAP is brimming with beautiful art and handmade products just waiting for you to pluck them and place them under the tree. Furthermore, all items are made from 75 percent repurposed or reused materials, adding even more green to your holiday season. My days of homemade gifts are long gone (I’ve been told I’m “too old” and they’re “not good”) but thanks to SCRAP and this gorgeous gift gallery, I can give a homemade gift this season. You can, too.
For the superb procrastinators in the room (*raises hand*) the Welcome Center has graciously prepared pre-packaged gifts for your friends, family, favorite teacher and more. If you have a fellow Denton lover in your fam or squad, there’s no better place to cop them some Lil ‘D swag. You might even find me milling about, mining the store for my upteenth “I <3 Denton” shirt, because you can never have too many.
Speaking of local, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better celebration of all the creative and culinary talent Denton has to offer than Dan’s Silver Leaf’s Winter Market. This annual, pre-Christmas extravaganza offers a treasure trove of handmade goods and an eclectic commemoration of all the fun artistry in Lil ‘D. Come for the gifts, but stay for the party: food and fun will be had in spades at this Denton mainstay.
After the ham hangover wears off, you’ll probably be wondering what to do for New Year’s Eve. Or, if you’re like me, you may be too preoccupied with that seemingly infinite Christmas list to think about the new year, which still seems far away. Either way, you can snag tickets to Andy’s Bar’s electro-infused New Year’s bash, and once again kill two birds with one stone: take care of a Christmas gift and prep for 2020 in style.
If you’re feeling a little old fashioned this holiday season, I don’t blame you: I still prefer Charlie Brown and Frosty specials to the latest Netflix Christmas release (save for The Christmas Prince, which is unimpeachable) and I would much rather ring in the new year with some wine and jazz than a dizzying and frenetic disco frenzy. If you concur, snag you and your beloved some tickets to Steve’s New Year’s bash, which promises some high-end fun for you and your significant other.
Are you looking even further into the future? Surprise your loved one with the first major festival of 2020 – the Denton Black Film Festival! This cultural celebration is Jan. 22-26, so get your all-access passes to the films, comedy, interactive expo and opening night with Jazzmeia Horn and cross that very special film snob off your list.
