Whether you’re a Denton music aficionado or you’ve just moved here and are still getting to know what’s happening around town, everyone can enjoy Twilight Tunes! What is that, you ask? Twilight Tunes is a weekly music series through June that showcases some of the best local bands and – here’s the kicker – it’s completely free. YES. You read right – totally free!
So there’s really no reason for you to miss this awesome music series, put on by our great friends at the Denton Main Street Association. This week, the tunes are Texas singer-songwriters Jeff Glover, Joe Pat Hennen and Brian “Beerman” Houser, but in future weeks, there will be salsa music (El Nuevo Mi Son – May 4), jump blues/boogie woogie/swing (Little Elmo and the Mambo Kings – May 18), jazzy hip-hop music (the Boombachs – June 1) and even some classic rock (Cliff Temple – June 15). See the full lineup here.
How does one make the most out of their Twilight Tunes experience?
Find your shade
Come early and scout out the best shady spot – It can get warm, especially those later dates, so aim for a nice shade tree to perch under.
Bring the proper outdoor concert ware
If you’ve forgotten your lawn chair, blankets or tables at home, just head over to the Discover Denton Welcome Center (111 W. Hickory), where there is a full range of great products for rental or sale to make your Twilight Tunes experience that much better.
Rent a chair or blanket for $5 each! There are also awesome tables you can rent if you are adverse to picnicking on the ground for $10. Do you just *know* that you’re going to be doing this every week, but you are not outfitted properly? The Welcome Center even has those pretty picnic blankets and metal tables for purchase so you are never unprepared!
Don’t forget the vittles
Twilight Tunes happens in the evenings right around dinner time. Now, there’s two schools of thought here – Happy Hour or the full meal.
Thinking more Happy Hour? Get yourself a glass of wine at Wine Squared or a growler of beer from Bearded Monk so you can enjoy a yummy beverage. Denton has open container laws, however, those that maintain the Courthouse Lawn ask that you please do not bring glass containers for safety reasons.
Just need a little something to munch on? Barley & Board has great cheeseboards that make a perfect appetizer or a complement to the beverage of your choice.
Is it supper time? Pick up a pizza from J&Js or Mellow Mushroom, tacos from any of the great spots near the Square or food truck fare at Austin Street Truck Stop so you don’t cut your concert short to appease your rumbling tummy. Feeling like a Chestnut Tree picnic? Pick up a delicious quiche, sandwich or flatbread (and don’t forget the sides and desserts!) They’ll even loan you a picnic basket to transport it (limited supplies). Call ahead to order.
