“Students in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas will show off their work at the 56th annual Voertman Student Art Competition and Exhibition. Students gained practical hands-on experience in crafting and showcasing their masterpieces, which were judged by an experienced fine arts professional.

Two students won top honors in the prestigious annual competition that attracted 85 other contestants.

Leah Flook, a junior, won $1,000 for her four pieces in the undergraduate division. Two of her pieces, “A Nightmare and a Wet Dream” and “Sit and Take It,” were constructed using wood and mixed media. Her third entry, “Hasselhoff,” was made using oil and mixed media. “Untitled,” her last entry, was an oil on canvas. Flook’s two paintings feature portraits of a young woman.

Julie Libersat, a graduate student, entered three projects that won her $1,000 and the top prizein the graduate division. Libersat’s “House Fire” was a mix of video, TV and media player art. “Tuscan Hills at Unicorn Lake” was a single channel video, and her “Subdivision Wallpaper” entry was a digital print, an aerial representation of a subdivision.

Seven students won a mix of cash prizes and gift certificates from Voertman’s bookstore, the competition’s sponsor.

Fine art appraiser Rachel Blackburn Cozad judged this year’s contest. Cozad, the owner of Rachel Cozad Fine Art and Madison Group Fine Art Appraisal in Kansas City, Mo., has more than 25 years of experience in fine art analysis.

The competition was created in 1960 by Paul Voertman, founder of Voertman’s bookstores in Denton.
