I love holidays. My favorites, in no particular order, are Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Administrative Assistants’ Day and National Turkey Lovers’ Day (not Thanksgiving; it’s a day for just turkey, and it’s coming up!). I love the pageantry, the festivities, and best of all, I love the paid holiday off. While I’m still working on making National Turkey Lovers’ Day a federally recognized holiday, I don’t have to worry about Memorial Day. We get the day to ourselves, and long weekends mean long walks with your beloved and lots of #Dentoning activities.
Here’s a rundown of the places to be and see and the festivities to enjoy to make this Memorial Day weekend memorable with your significant other.
Kick off the three-day weekend with a festive Friday at Backyard on Bell, home to a slate of seriously good music. Dallas darlings Rosegarden Funeral Party will join DEZORAH, Springtime and the Changes and Manifest Destiny’s Child for an eclectic and entertaining mix of Texas tunes. This artistic amalgamation offers a wide array of genres for music fans, so even if you’ve never heard of these bands, chances are you’ll enjoy the fun — and the delicious drinks — at Backyard on Bell.
The new nifty art gallery La Rose Maison is located on Hickory Street, a short trip from any number of tasty lunch spots. After you grab a quick bite for lunch, head to the gallery to check out artist Leon Davis’ show. Art shows are my go-to when I’m in the mood for a classy date, and Leon’s La Rose Maison show is a perfect fit for romantics looking to stay inside and enjoy a lowkey afternoon. Plus, if I can fake knowing anything about art, you can, too!
Missing football? Well, I can’t help you there. But if you’re craving futbol, that’s a different story altogether. The Denton Diablos — our new semi-pro team — has a game on Sunday at Mean Green Soccer Stadium, and the Denton CVB is giving away tickets. Who needs a trip to Europe when you can get art and soccer in one weekend in Denton? (My fiance, apparently, but that’s a story for a different blog!) Check out @DiscoverDenton on Twitter to see how you can win tickets to Sunday’s match.
Awesome hotel deals
Cue The GoGos, because you deserve a vacation — even if you can’t go far. If any of the above activities interest you, or if you have other #Dentoning plans for Memorial Day weekend, consider staying a night at the Embassy Suites, which is offering a can’t-miss, $59 per night deal for both Sunday and Monday night. BONUS: They are starting their Dive-In Movie Series, with family-friendly movies by the pool (Moana is Friday night and Sing is Saturday night)! You’d be hard-pressed to find a better deal at a hotel of that caliber, and admit it: you deserve to treat yo’ self and ring in the summer with a deal this suite. I’d apologize for that hotel pun, but hey, it wouldn’t be Denton Dates without bad puns.
