Denton Dates: Grub, Fun and an Escape from the Sun

Published on: Wed, Jul 25, 2018

This is the second column in an ongoing series by our Love Guru in Residence, Tyler Hicks, For other sage wisdom, guidance and romantic recommendations, read on here and here.

As anyone who has gone outside in the last, oh, two months knows — it’s hot. Not typical Texas hot — unbearable, nigh unfathomable hot. That being said, it’s still a summer of love — or at least it can be, if you play your cards right. You’ve already made the first step in the right direction by seeking the counsel of Denton’s very own love guru, so now all that’s left to do is plan the perfect date for your significant other. That means fun events and activities that pair well (pun intended) with a local brew.

Whether you’ve been dating for decades, years, months or minutes, or you’re just feeling things out, here’s what you must do to make your loved one swoon while avoiding the evil, merciless sun.

Grub, Fun and an Escape from the Sun

Do this: Start things off with a nice lunch indoors at Boca 31, a trendy Latin restaurant right next door to Armadillo Ales. You and your date will be able to choose from a wide array of tacos, empanadas and other savory street food options. They have plenty of beverages, too, but don’t quench your thirst just yet — there’s a drink-happy tour right next door.

Armadillo Ale Works blesses us with tours every Saturday, and, best of all, they’re indoors! Hop on over to this hoppin’ joint for a tour and tastings, and enjoy some of the finest beers in Denton alongside your fine date. But, like every well-rounded date, you’ll want to close things out with some solid tunes.

Every Saturday night this summer, local acts are tuning in and turning it up at the patio outside the food court at Golden Triangle Mall. This Summer Music Series is a must-do event for any and every Dentonite in the dog days of summer, and it’s also the perfect way to show your date that you’re attuned to all the most talented tunemakers in your area. The 28th is your last chance to catch these crazy good artists, and it’s a killer: local act The BoomBachs will transport you and your beloved to a different galaxy with their hip hop-meets-jazz, space gospel style.

Drink that: The Honey Please Mesquite Bean Blonde Ale is a honey-infused delight that always pairs well with tex-mex — and it’s available on tap at Armadillo Ale Works. Plus, it’s the ale that won the Armadillo guys the bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival. It’s the perfect treat for a sweet date, and it’ll be the cherry on top of the sundae that is your Saturday.

Stay tuned for more Denton Dates, our monthly blog series to help you plan a perfect #Dentoning date night.
