Have you seen the new Black Mirror? If not, save it for after Valentine’s Day — it’s not exactly romantic. But it is fun, in part because you have agency: You get to decide what to do and, in effect, create your own adventure. That’s what this blog is about.
Valentine’s Day is not a one-size-fits all deal. There are a seemingly unlimited number of activities in which you and your beloved could partake, but only some that are right for you. No couple is exactly alike, therefore even a Love Guru like myself should not and could not provide a perfect V-Day for each and every couple. But I can provide a bevy of beautiful options for different types of couples, from which you can create the Valentine adventure of your choice.
Some couples are sporty, some are artistic, some dig the culinary arts and some love a little of all three. No matter your style, every couple deserves to have a beautiful Valentine’s Day. All of the ingredients are here — it’s time create your own Valentine’s Day adventure.
If you’re feeling sporty…
Jogging in any number of Denton’s gorgeous parks is always a good idea (especially when the weather is, well, not hot) but no one would fault you for taking a break on V-Day. Instead, watch some premier athletes do their thing: The red hot Mean Green men’s basketball team takes on Florida Atlantic next week as C-USA play comes to an apex. Get your tickets to a lovely, sporty date night.
If you’re feeling artsy…
From the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center to UNT on the Square and all of UNT’s galleries, Denton offers a wide array of gorgeous galleries to entertain your gorgeous significant other. After you browse, make weekend plans for Saturday’s Artists Enclave Day of the Dance — a celebration of modern dance at TWU’s Black Box Theatre. A suggested $5 donation is all you need for a night of arts and entertainment fit for any culture-loving couple.
Friday is your last chance to see the breathtaking quilts of the “Life Stories through Quilts” exhibit by Barbara McCraw at the Greater Denton Arts Council, so it’s the perfect time to stroll through the gallery! Plus, the wildly-popular Materials Hard + Soft exhibit just opened. Bonus: did you miss Barbara McCraw’s first gallery talk? She’s giving another one Thursday from 7-8 pm!
If you’re into fine dining…
Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to wine and dine your significant other. Treat your date (and yo’ self) to a savory sushi dinner at Keiichi (reservations are required!). If you’re diggin’ American flair and fare, head over to 940s and enjoy a craft cocktail. For a night cap, jaunt over to Paschall to finish off your evening of class with the clink of glass. Curious about the spots having a special menu for Valentine’s Day? Check out our calendar!
Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be complete without a gift, of course, so don’t forget to pick up something nice for your loved one at any number of the shops around town or on the Square? My recommendation? The always reliable First People’s Jewelers for earrings, rings and other fine things, Atomic Candy or Beth Marie’s for all things sweet, or More Fun Comics and Games for the beloved nerd in your life.
Lastly, remember to spread some kindness this week — and every week. If there’s one thing this Certified* Love Guru knows, it’s that couples, singles, friends and family deserve to know they are loved as often as possible.
