The Wedding Singer-CakeTotally Tubular… basically the only words to describe the performance of the Wedding Singer presented by the Music Theatre of Denton (MTD). Starting out I wasn’t sure what to expect, mainly because I have never seen the movie but I was so surprised and the crowd showered the performers with applause and laughter throughout the entire show.  The performance was in the Campus Theatre right off the downtown Denton square, which is so rad. If the neon sign doesn’t take you back in time, the inside décor definitely will. The theatre stood abandoned for ten years  but several Denton art organizations  worked together to restore it to its former glory, and that is what is being used today.

We were invited to a special viewing to celebrate  MTD’s 30th anniversary, and they brought out the big guns. There was a small wedding reception set up with cake, champagne, and other goodies. The MTD put so much thought and time into the details that it really made you feel like you were back in the 80’s at a crazy wedding reception, just waiting for a family member to do something embarrassing.

The actual show follows a wedding singer named Robbie Hart, and his journey from love to heartbreak and all things in between.

We took our seats and the play began. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. The actors were choice, their performances were on-point and made you feel like you were right there in the middle of the action. Disco ball, puffy dresses, and the occasional pair of hammer pants all make appearances, along with all of your favorite 80’s jams, and even some notable stars of the time to brighten your night.

The show was charming, quirky, and exciting leaving all of us with big smiles on our faces and talking about which characters were our favorites or which line was the best. The show is amazing for dudes or dudettes, but not for the little ones. I would think PG-13, with some language, sex and drug use. It’s perfect for a date night, girl’s night out, or just to see with your pals- just go see it!

It was like totally a gnarly night at an epic play with an all-star cast!  Also so refreshing just being able to go, laugh and love every minute of it, so get stoked and go see The Wedding Singer!
