We’re nearing the end of November, which means you are already desperately behind on your Christmas shopping. I’m (kinda) joking, of course, but if you’re like me and you want to get a head start before December hits, then you’re in luck: This week, there’s a way to hit the bricks and get all the gifts without going toe-to-toe with ravenous Black Friday shoppers.
On Saturday, November 25th, you’ll be promoting the local businesses and people you love, while getting ahead on that gargantuan holiday shopping list—and finding time to treat yourself, too. I’m talking about Small Business Saturday 2017, where you can #ShopSmallDenton ‘til you drop.
American Express launched Small Business Saturday to support the locally-owned mom and pop shops that often get overlooked during the rush for Black Friday deals. This year, Dentonites have a bevy of options to choose from, including business on the Square, the holiday market at the Denton Community Market, and shops at Fry Street, Unicorn Lake and the Golden Triangle Mall. Local faves like Zera, Mellow Mushroom, Shop the Barn, First People’s Jewelers and, of course, the Discover Denton Welcome Center, are just some of the nearly six dozen shops that have already joined the ever-growing list of participants.
As if supporting local businesses is not enough of an incentive, our entrepreneurial Dentonites have sweetened the pot with plenty of prizes and giveaways. Each shop has Golden Tickets that they will be giving out at random that can be claimed for swag bags at one of five Welcome Stations (listed at the first link above). Furthermore, the shopper who posts the most selfies with the hashtag #ShopSmallDenton wins an Apple Watch. There will also be door prizes, with gift cards from local businesses totaling $50, to five lucky winners.
It’s always a good day to support the people who enliven Denton with their craft and creativity, but Small Business Saturday is the communal Christmas shopping bonanza you’ve been waiting for—minus the threat of throngs and throngs of shoppers hunting for their Turbo-Man action figures. (Anyone else remember Jingle All the Way?) It also doubles as the perfect way to kick-start the holiday, and win oodles of free gifts in the process.
So grab a friend or two, and we’ll see you out and about. Don’t forget to hashtag, and don’t forget to catch me anywhere that sells coffee.
