It was a dark and stormy night. The sun had long given up trying to break through the thick clouds that hung over Denton, leaving the townsfolk to fight through the downpour on their own. How appropriate, I thought to myself. I was braving the storm only to enter into totally different type of darkness, full of torture, ghosts, romance, and music. I was on my way to see The Addams Family.

I was soaked by the time I reached the Campus Theatre. I dashed in through the green room door, my husband, Jon, and two friends, Angelica and Erika, close behind me. The ambiance was already settled into my mind. I had no idea how much more appropriately themed the night would get.
The theatre slowly filled with others who had decided to audaciously defy the tempest outside. People I had known for years greeted me like we were at a family holiday. People I had only known for months did the same. I had expected to see the darkness and gloom highlighted when I saw this show. I hadn’t expected the sense of family to be so driven home by others watching the show with us.
The lobby of the theatre was fantastically decorated. Portraits that aged before your eyes into a wasted skeleton peered out at passersby, specters emerged from the wall, and a bat hung in a birdcage draped with black cloth.

Then the curtain parted and I no longer saw those I know and love. Instead, I saw the Addams Family silhouetted against a backdrop of dilapidated graves and skeletal trees. The music swept the audience away into the funereal gloom of a family that loves each other deeply, and the gradual understanding of outsiders to their “fancy New York lifestyle.”
Who better to embrace and tell the story of the Addams than a group of actors who all have passions for something a little odd and out of the ordinary, but who are some of the most welcoming, loving, and devoted friends you will ever meet?
