Denton County African American Museum (DCAAM)

The Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum currently exhibits photographs and information about many of the African American families that arrived from Dallas, seeking a better life here in Denton County, in 1875.  These exhibits will be moved to a restored house that once was home to families in the African American community of Quakertown.  The DCAAM will exhibit these artifacts that tell the unforgettable stories of those families and many more.

Located on the first floor of the 1896 Courthouse-on-the-Square, the museum houses a variety of Denton historical exhibits including Denton County Communities, Historic African-American Families, Historic Hispanic Families, as well as Southwest American Indian and Denton County pottery, A Chronology of Denton County through Weaponry, and special collections featuring dolls and toys, thimbles, Pecan Art, and American pressed blue glass. The research office contains genealogical information including family histories, early Denton County photographs, and cemetery records.

This museum offers a look into Denton County's past. Exhibits range from early 20th century quilts to historical photographs to genuine artifacts depicting Denton's changing history. The museum is also home to the Genealogy and Family Research Center where archives hold thousands of documents and photographs from early Denton County History.

Located in the lobby of the Historic DFD Central Fire Station, this museum is dedicated to brave firefighters pas and present.  Open since 2005, Denton's newest museum showcases fascinating memorabilia from the 1800's to th epresent, including an old hose cart pulled by hand, items from a 1935 ladder truck, antique gear and volumes of daily fire report logs. Guided tours available and group tours welcome.

An exhibit of gowns worn by the First Ladies of Texas. This collection, the only one in existence, includes either the actual garments or faithful copies of the gowns worn by the wives of the governors of Texas and presidents of the Republic of Texas. This exhibit was first created in 1940 and has been updated with gowns worn by former first ladies Mamie Eisenhower, Lady Bird Johnson and Barbara Bush during their husbands' terms in the White House.

Hangar 10 is located at the Denton Municipal Airport. The museum boasts four planes. The Lockheed 10A plane, which has been owned by several individuals, including child movie star Margaret O'Brien. The Stagger Wing, built by Beech Aircraft, was used mainly for VIP of admirals and dignitaries. The PT-22 was used by the Army Air Corps primarily as a trainer for neophyte pilots. The last of the planes is the small, sporty-looking Piper L-4, which was used during World War II as a reconnaissance plane. The museum is free and open to the public.

Built in 1939, the Little Chapel has been named one of Texas' 20 most outstanding architectural achievements; it was designed by the late O'Neil Ford. TWU art students designed the stained glass windows which depict the theme "Women Ministering to Human Needs". Open during school hours.
