Anna Kournikova, born in Moscow, Russia, moved to Florida to train with the Nick Bolletieri Tennis Academy when she was nine years old.. The youngster had an impressive start to her career. Turning pro at age 14 in 1995, anna went on to end that year as the Junior European Champion and Junior World Champion. Anna Kournikova also won the Orange Bowl that same year. Anna Kournikova also played for the Russian team in the 1995 Fed Cup.

1996 saw her advance to the fourth round of the US Open, only to be defeated by then No.1 Steffi Graf. Anna played for Russia at the 1996 Olympics too. Anna Kournikova reached the semi finals of the prestigious Wimbledon championships in 1996; this was to be her career-best showing as far as singles titles were concerned, even though she continued to rank among the top 20 quite consistently on the WTA roster. In fact, she got as far as the semi-finals and finals of many a tournament, without actually winning any of them. This changed in 1999 when kournikova won the Wimbledon doubles by partnering with Martina Hingis; they won the doubles title in 2000 too.

Notwithstanding this lack of actual singles championship wins, Kournikova remains very much in the public eye due to numerous high profile endorsements like Rolex and Adidas, which also net her millions of dollars a year. Anna Kournikova also puts in appearances as a presenter for various shows and as the guest of honor at high profile events like the Adidas showroom opening in New York City in May 2005. Since ankle and back surgery in 2001 and 2003 respectively, her tennis has been further restricted; not so her other commitments, including a small part in a major Hollywood film. Anna Kournikova continues to be the subject of millions of Internet searches, with hundreds of sites dedicated to her; in fact she is still known as a “Tennis Star.”

In total, she has won 16 WTA titles, which include 3 Grand Slams. She achieved a career high of number 8 on the WTA singles rankings and a top ranking on the doubles tour.
